Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment
Responsible Body:
Environment Agency

Summary:
The WEEE Regulations aim to reduce the amount of electrical and electronic waste going to landfill and improve recovery and recycling rates.

Key Requirements:
You will need to comply with the WEEE Regulations if you:

Manufacture or import electrical or electronic equipment (EEE);
Distribute EEE;
Generate any EEE waste;
Collect EEE waste from your customers for treatment or disposal;
Operate a waste treatment facility; or
Export EEE waste.

If you are a producer you have responsibility for the electrical or electronic equipment (EEE) you place on the market. You must make sure that EEE is disposed of in an environmentally sound way (including the treatment, recovery and recycling of the components where appropriate) and you must join a producer compliance scheme who will register you with the Environment Agency.

If you are a distributor or retailer, you must:

Inform your customers of the environmental impact of EEE and the separate collection of household waste EEE;
Facilitate the take-back of household waste EEE from consumers free of charge; and
Make and retain records of the information you provide and any household waste EEE that you receive.

Facilitating the take-back of household waste EEE can be done in a number of ways: for example you can collect the waste EEE or allow customers to bring waste EEE to your stores. Alternatively, you could join the Distributor Take-Back Scheme which exempts distributors from providing in-store take-back of EEE and the joining fee goes towards developing waste EEE collection infrastructure.
Penalties & Implications of non-compliance:

You may be prosecuted if you fail to comply with the WEEE Regulations. If as a producer you do not join a producer compliance scheme you could face prosecution and a fine.
