Vehicle Emissions
Responsible Body:
Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA)

Summary:
You must ensure that all your motor vehicles comply with emission limits and weight regulations.

Key Requirements:
VOSA enforces these standards by carrying out roadside checks.

Make sure that all your vehicles comply with exhaust emission standards which are specified in the:

Ministry of Transport test scheme for motor vehicles;
Heavy goods vehicle scheme; and
Public service vehicle scheme.

Local authorities monitor air quality and if the air quality in an area drops below a certain threshold, the authority may declare it to be an Air Quality Management Area. The authority must then create and implement a plan to improve air quality within the area (e.g. some local authorities are introducing low emission zones to reduce pollution in urban centres). These restrict the types of vehicle that are allowed into a specified area. Check with the local authority to find out if there are restrictions on vehicle access in the areas where your business operates.

You should encourage your staff to turn vehicle engines off when they are stationary for any length of time.
Penalties & Implications of non-compliance:

Compliance will help not only to reduce your fuel costs, but also to reduce exhaust emissions and noise. Failure to comply could lead to prosecution and a fine.
